Seesmic
October 16, 2007
A cold front came in tonite! Par for the course, I was attired seasonably inappropriate (think summer dress), and so it was perfect weather for slipping back indoors after a lovely dinner to shake off the wet. Mmm. Fall has come in…right on schedule.
So famed Parisian entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur has recently moved to San Francisco to surround himself with the brightest and the best, where on October 8, he unfurled his much anticipated startup Seesmic to a closed beta audience. Le Meur has just given me the code for an invite to try the service, commenting that it is “very, very alpha”, and so am about to be the owner of 1 of 20-something accounts in the world. Alright, so am baiting just a titch, but this is what what I am told by someone.
Oh, I am so there with bells on.
Seesmic wants to shake up the world of 2-D by pushing further the proverbial edge of online user engagement, even changing user behavior, which is a powerful endeavor indeed. Le Meur’s expansive vision involves developing a video based Twitter-like service over existing social networking platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, thus bypassing the pesky and arduous endeavor of vying with the present social networking heavyweights for his slice of user pie. The project will be “open, crowd sourced and community driven online TV”, and content will be created through user-generated videos, with promise of potential revenue shares going to the most popular content creators. This is just the beginning.
Yes, kiddies, Seesmic is another evolutionary step towards changing how we view the medium of telly.
Given that I have not yet tested the service (and an aside that my opinion is one from an average consumer’s vantage point — you know this), there is little more at the moment that I can contribute or paraphrase here that has not been already better expressed by Michael Arrington, who has given the service a glowing review.
Regardless, I shall report back with full thoughts on this topic after this weekend.
In the meantime, have a look-see at this virtual trainwreck.
